It is a herbaceous perennial thistle that grows up to 120 cm tall, with spiny foliage and spherical blue flowers. Last year, Michelle discovered that artichokes also belong to the thistle family, asteroideae. Although every effort has been made to accurately describe these plants, please note that height, flowering time, and color may vary in different climates. Spiky grey-green foliage sets the scene for the vibrant flowers.

Echinops bannaticus, known as the blue globular thistle, is a flowering plant in the sunflower family that is native to southeastern Europe.

How do you grow blue thistle?

During the growing season, deadhead spent flowers cutting stems just above a pair of leaves to encourage a second bloom. What is important to know is that they need to be watered regularly, as water evaporates faster when growing in pots. Water the young plants twice a week for a month, then gradually reduce additional watering as they become established. Cut through taproot so that each divided serving contains a taproot and one or more “eyes,” the points from which the fibrous roots grow.

If you drop echinops its seeds every year, you should know what the seedlings look like in spring, and either keep or pull them when they emerge, depending on where you want the plant to grow and fill up.

Do thistles come back every year?

The trick is to completely replace the crop every four years — like strawberries — by throwing away a quarter of your plants each year. But did you know that there are at least four thistles that are not only non-invasive but are also native to western Oregon? These native thistles are not only well-behaved, but also have a positive impact on the health of our work areas and nature areas. Thistles are perennial weeds that grow back year after year and form ever deeper roots as they become established. Long-term eradication of two-year thistles is difficult due to the large number of seeds that each plant can produce.

Is blue thistle a perennial?

Blue thistle is a beautiful cut flower (it's great as a filler for bouquets) that is available most of the year. Echinops bannaticus 'Blue Glow' is a seed-propagated variety that grows 4 feet tall in mid-summer and has deep blue flower balls. They are perennials, making the plants long-lasting garden companions with robust habits and minimal globular thistle maintenance. In autumn, when the flowering period is over, globular thistles continue to provide structural interest with their attractive seed heads.

Growing globular thistle from collected seeds is inaccurate, but purchased cultivated seeds have a better seedling rate. However, they have an exciting shape and come in deep purple and blue hues that irresistibly complement the perennial garden.
